At Duchess Nursery we have ‘topic of the month’ and recently it was healthy eating which led us to choose the book, The Hungry Caterpillar, introducing the letter C.
Activities that took place over this topic time included making little caterpillars on leaves, using cotton wool, baking caterpillar shaped cakes, playing with ‘caterpillar’ green playdough and painting beautiful, symmetrical butterfly pictures.
As the story is about all the types of food that the Hungry Caterpillar eats, it gave us the opportunity to learn about different foods, talking to the children about what is healthy. After we had done this, the children then went on a trip to the local market to buy the fruits they had identified: peaches, strawberries, pears, plums and oranges.
At the market, when choosing the fruits, we talked about the colours and shapes of the fruit and which ones looked like the pictures in the book, and on returning to the Nursery, we counted and tasted the fruit we had bought. The Hungry Caterpillar gave us so much inspiration and was a fantastic and fun project for us all!
